Lose Weight and Make More $$$

July 7, 2008

Many of us have the same reasons for wanting to exercise and lose weight…..look better, feel better, lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol, decreased risk of some cancers, lower risk of heart disease, etc.But did you know that making your waistline thinner will also make your wallet fatter?

It’s true! Losing weight will help you earn and save more money. “Studies have consistently shown that obese employees are paid less than normal-weight employees doing similar jobs” (Source: www.HealthNewsDigest.com – Palo Alto, CA)

A comprehensive study of wages in 1998 found that obese workers earn significantly less than than non-obese employees. How much less? About $3.41 per hour! This discrepancy was found only in those workers who had employer-sponsored health insurance, perhaps suggesting that the higher costs of insuring obese individuals was being passed on to the employees themselves. (Source: Bundorf and co-author Jay Bhattacharya, MD, PhD, assistant professor of medicine at the Center for Health Policy/Center for Primary Care and Outcomes Research).

So it’s possible that losing weight could eventually add substantially to your paycheck! But did you know that losing weight may also lower the amount of money you personally pay out in medical costs?

According to a study published in Health Affairs recently, obese Americans pay $732 more for health care each year than do normal-weight adults. So what would you do with an extra $732? Considering that $732 is more than double the annual cost of a Pick Up The Pace membership, it seems that being a Pick Up The Pace member pays for itself!

We all have great reasons for wanting to lose that excess weight, and how we have two more: potentially higher wages and lower out-of-pocket medical expenses!

However, we do need to issue one word of warning…..when losing weight at Pick Up The Pace you may find that you need to spend some of that ’saved money’ on a new wardrobe! After all, you will have to buy some new ’skinny’ clothes!

More Info……

Until next time, we’ll see you at Pick Up The Pace!

Sudden Coronary Death Rarer in Men Who Regularly Eat Fish Rich in Omega-3 Fatty Acids

July 3, 2008

Study: By Miranda Hitti
WebMD Medical News

Reviewed By Louise Chang, MD

March 12, 2008 — Eating fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids may help prevent sudden coronary death, Dutch researchers report.

But the occasional slab of salmon or other fatty fish may not do the trick; following a fishy diet for the long run may be more effective, according to the researchers, who included Martinette Streppel, MSc, of the Netherlands’ National Institute for Public Health and the Environment.

Streppel’s team studied 40 years of data on 1,373 Dutch men age 40 and older.

Men who reported eating an average of  6 grams of fatty fish daily — that’s two servings, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s serving-size guidelines — were 55% less likely than men who ate no fatty fish to die of sudden coronary death.

Those benefits were strongest before age 50 and with long-term consumption of fatty fish.

The researchers chalk up the results to the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, found in fish including salmon and mackerel.

The Dutch study doesn’t show exactly how much EPA and DHA it takes to prevent sudden coronary death, or what fish the men ate. But the findings show that eating lots of fatty fish may not be better than eating a moderate amount; the big gap was between fish eaters and those who don’t eat fish at all.

The findings will be presented today in Colorado Springs, Colo., at the American Heart Association’s 48th Annual Conference on Cardiovascular Disease Epidemiology.

Angina and Bypass

July 3, 2008

Angina and Bypass

Angina seems to be a common problem these days and also bypass surgery used to correct the problem.  I had heart surgery back in 1998.  I had to have my aortic valve replaced.  It was a hard time for me but thank God everything is fine.  I like researching alternative ways to good health.  That’s what I plan to be sharing on this blog. Welcome, thanks for the visit.  Plan to post more later today.

Enjoy Your Day,
